Wedding at Yaxley Church, Peterborough - Steve and Emma

28th October 2015
Aside from the fact that Steve Raby and Emma Tavener were a delight to work with from start to finish, I was so pleased when they chose me to be their wedding photographer. Not because Yaxley Church is the nearest church in the world to my house. It's that Yaxley Church is also one of the most beautiful around and has the wonderful advantage of having a balcony at the front of the church and a mezzanine at the back.

Photographers are allowed to use these during the wedding ceremony and this gives couples a unique view of their wedding that's simply not possible in most churches. Fortunately I nearly always have a second photographer with me so we were able to photograph Emma from both vantage points at the same time, as she walked down the aisle.
Although the wedding was on 25th September 2015 I'd had the pleasure of creating Emma and Steve's engagement photographs a full 16 months earlier in May 2014. You can check out their lovely session in my secret bluebell wood on this blog post

One of the lovely things I like to do with engagement photographs is create a beautiful audio visual presentation of the images and then project them onto a big screen at the wedding reception. Emma and Steve loved the idea and I even included lots of photographs of them growing up over the years. It always gets a few laughs, oohs, ahhhs and tears. The haircuts are always good value, too!

A few weeks before the wedding Steve, Emma and I scouted out the venues and made our plans for what the best locations would be for the group, confetti and romantic photographs. Time is of the essence on a wedding day and the better planned things are the sooner the happy couple can get on with enjoying their day.

I wasn't required for the getting ready photographs in the morning, so I got a head start on getting photographs of the details and table decorations at the reception. The reception was at the British Legion in Yaxley. Emma organised nearly all the decorations and she'd transformed the Legion's big hall with everything from grand candelabras to the flag of Steve's old army platoon.

One of the many wedding details I liked was the idea of having 'wedding libs' on each place setting. This is where guests could write down their advice and tips for a happy marriage. I hope they got at least one sensible response!

So, after I'd photographed the details and spent a happy, chucklesome time chatting with their friend Louise who made the fabulous cake I popped home for a bit.

So, the first time I saw Emma on the wedding day was as she swept up to the church in her chauffeur driven car. Emma being the organised and considerate person she is was actually a couple of minutes early. Actually, since brides are almost NEVER early it actually threw a few people into a spin - "What, she's here, ALREADY?" I kept her quiet by taking some lovely images of her with her dad and a cracker of Emma doing a completely impromptu but perfectly executed pose.

Her hair and dress were so chic and she absolutely rocked them both. Steve didn't stop smiling all day!

What a lovely bunch of guests too - I've rarely had so much banter and chats at a wedding.

Thank you all for a wonderful day and for this wonderful testimonial you left on my website (which I understand was written by Steve - impressive as it's normally the bride!):

"I cannot recommend Dan highly enough, its not just that he's extremely talented, he puts you immediately at ease, makes you feel that nothing is too much trouble, is happy to listen to your ideas, even though he's obviously the pro and generally makes the whole experience a pleasure. I sometimes find these things can be a little stilted, but not with Dan, we felt part of the process and that he was giving us his best, not just 'another photoshoot'. He was great on the big day, and we are so pleased with the results. If the photo's are important to you, THIS is the guy, its that simple."
