03rd June 2015
Wedding venue: All wedding ceremony and reception photos taken at Bassmead Manor Barns
Wedding dress: 'Captivating' by Suzanne Neville and purchased at Stamford Bridal Rooms. Nicola tells me they have "Amazing customer service".
Floristry and bouquet: A friend of a friend, she wasn't a florist just amazing with flowers!
Cake: Friend of a friend again and the cake decorations were by Matthew and his Auntie (wow, that cake was awesome!)
Music - Matthew's Uncle, cousins and Matthew's sister! Just look at the photographs of people dancing to see how well they rocked it!
Mini Golf: CrazyGolf4U and it went down a storm - people were virtually queuing to get on!
Suits and bridesmaid outfits - Vow Bridal Gallery in Wansford.

I think the phrase 'The Happy Couple' was written especially for Matthew and Nicola. I've rarely seen a bride and groom smile and laugh in so many of their wedding photos. It's lovely to see a couple who are so relaxed, fun loving and into each other on their wedding day, which was at the stunning Bassmead Manor Barns in St Neots.

The funny thing is that throughout all our chats before the wedding day Nicola kept stressing to me how much she hated being photographed and how she always felt awkward. I always reassured her that about 80-90% of people tell me the exact same thing and it always turns out great.

I suggested that an engagement session would be a good idea as it would give them a chance to get used to being in front of the camera. They LOVE cycling so we incorporated them into the session on a beautiful evening at Nene Park.

They laughed, smiled and kissed their way through the entire thing! I'd like to say it was my magnetic charm and charisma that did the trick... ....but I think it was more a case of them being very much in love and enjoying the moment. Here are some of their engagement photographs:

Once they'd seen the results of their engagement photographs it gave them the confidence to get on with enjoying their wedding day, safe in the knowledge that they really would look fab in their wedding photos.

And what a wedding day!

Bassmead Manor Barns stands within the medieval moat of an ancient manor house and has beautiful open countryside all around. There are wheat fields in the summer and rape fields in the spring. The barn where the wedding ceremony takes place oozes rustic elegance and charm and the reception room is wonderfully light and airy.

Inside and out it's the perfect venue for a wedding photographer because you know you're going to get great images whatever the weather and all year round.

The food looked amazing and I loved the idea of having a street food vendor in the evening so people could sit outside and eat as the sun set over the fields.

Matthew and Nicola had a fantastic alternative to a guestbook. Because they love to travel they laid out a map of the world for people to write messages on. For example, Nicola's dad wrote 'I climbed here' over the Himalayas. I don't think he meant Everest, but he certainly has enough spirit, drive and enthusiasm to do it, so I wouldn't be surprised! Then again his sense of direction may have let him down as in his speech he let it be known that he accidentally went into the Bassmead ladies' toilets!

That wasn't the most embarrassing faux pas of the day though. That was reserved for me. I split my trousers rather drastically while bending down to get a nice low angle while photographing the bouquet. I think I'd weakened them while chuckling at all the speeches. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it! No-one said they noticed, but my orange undergarments didn't lend themselves to discretion! Enough about my pants, on to the wedding photographs....

However, I've subsequently received this lovely testimonial from Nicola, so I guess they either didn't notice or didn't care about my wardrobe malfunction:

"Many thanks to Dan for his firm but gentle approach to taking wedding photos; he is easy-going, fun, unobtrusive and a top class photographer to boot. So much so that our wedding venue are now using his photographs in their brochures - he said it's because of our model looks (haha!) but really it's because he makes anyone look brilliant! Cannot recommend Dan and his amazing talent enough - thank you for making what could have been a stressful experience actually a really enjoyable one."

Here are some of my favourite images from their special day - I hope they do justice to the zest for life they both have and the beautiful setting they chose to get married in. I'm very proud and honoured that Bassmead have asked me for some of these images to use on their website.
