Li'l ol' me!

Click here to find out why a lowly photographer in Peterborough is The World's Most Helpful Photographer

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not!”
Dr. Seuss

I love that quote from the classic children's book. It just seems to sum up the solution to most of life's troubles. Care.

I may only be a lowly portrait photographer, but I do care a whole awful lot about what I do. After all, what's more important than your family? I can't think of a more meaningful thing to create than family portraits and wedding photos that touch your heart. Aren't they the first possession you would rescue from a fire? What...? Your iPad! Shame on you! ;-)

Life before photography
Back in April 2002 I met my Malaysian wife at a wedding while travelling around South East Asia with a friend. She was the wedding planner!

11 months later we got married in Kuala Lumpur and I got to wear a crown, wield a sword (which I broke) and sit on a throne like David Beckham. They don't do subtle weddings in Malaysia!

At that time I had a soulless marketing job for a construction company. My claim to 'fame' is I created the UK's first ever roofing catalogue. 120 pages of pure boredom!

I knew there had to be more to life than writing about the carbonate content of roofing slates.

At that time my boss gave me a camera to take photographs of our roofing products and projects.

Photographing a guttering system isn't very life affirming though.
When my dad passed away in 2004 I realised we only had a few tiny, faded photographs of him.

That was incredibly depressing. My dad was a real character - a blunt Yorkshire-man (although I'm from Cambridge) with wild hair and a wild wit. Why had we not bothered to photograph our family and the special days we'd shared.

...and why had we not hired a professional photographer for our exotic wedding? Our photographs are a blurry, fading mess.

That's when the penny dropped. As a portrait and wedding photographer I can help bring families together with images that remind them all how important they are to each other. Photographs remind you that your life is actually pretty great and that you're really loved.

I should give credit to my wife Asliza here. She encouraged me hugely. Malaysian families are incredibly close. When we visit they'll often be 10 of us in one house and they'll sleep on the floor lined up like sardines, while they offer me the air conditioned double room with en-suite!

Now that's a loving family!

What's it like to be photographed by me?
I think the best way to understand is to read my testimonials on Google and here.

If you look at my logo you'll notice it's not designed to be like some slick cool-dude advertising photographer's logo.

I'm in business to spread a little joy and have some fun, not to be a massive control freak and turn your wedding or family session into a stressful movie set.

Don't get me wrong, I'm serious about getting great images, but I'm more of an Ainsley Harriott than a Gordon Ramsey! Although I look like Heston Blumenthal... and Harry Hill!

What's the point of getting a great image if I've annoyed the heck out of you, right?!

Ultimately you come first.

It's all about what you want.

90% of my clients ask for something natural, relaxed , fun and creative.

So that's what I focus on.

I also have a sneaky bunch of tricks to get natural smiles and laughter out of people of all ages.

Sometimes I have to leave my dignity at home to achieve that though...

...I've been known to round up wedding guests for their group photographs by impersonating a sheep dog...

Stuff I love

You?
Maybe.

If you're cheerful and relaxed and don't take yourself too seriously then I'll probably want to hug you!

The Pay it Forward Tribe
It's a group in Peterborough that I joined who do random acts of kindness within the community - everything from feeding the homeless to litter picking and even giving out free hugs and cake in the street.

The ManKIND project
This is my mission to do a random act of kindness for someone from (or with heritage from) every country on earth. This is where I'm up to so far. http://danwaterscreative.com/mankind-photo-project

Favourite movie
Officially it's The Shawshank Redemption. Don't tell anyone, but it's really 'My Dog Skip'. Marley and Me just makes me cry too much!

Travel
Since my wife and I don't have children we get to travel a fair bit. I have a very long bucket list to get through! My favourite place? I loved Komodo Island; it's like the land that time forgot with 3m Komodo Dragons roaming freely through the villages.

Animals
If it's furry, scaly or feathery then I want to take care of it. Except spiders. If one walks up the aisle at a wedding then I'm outta there!

Table tennis
I used to flaunt my scrawny white legs while playing table tennis in the top division but I gave it up so I could focus on photography. I may just go back to it though.

Alaskan Bush People
It's a documentary about a family of 9 living wild in the Alaskan wilderness. The family is so closely knit and achieve amazing things by working together.

Uplifting Trance music
Yep - back in the day I used to love waving my arms in the air to obscure bands like Underworld, Leftfield and Eat Static. Here's me being photographed with my own camera by one of the wedding guests. They forced me to do it! Woop woop!

If I sound like someone you wouldn't mind hanging out with then I'd love to chat and find out how I can help.
