Biker wedding with a dinosaur at Thorney Abbey

THORNEY ABBEY, ABBEY PLACE, THORNEY, PETERBOROUGH, CAMBRIDGESHIRE, PE6 0QA

A 14 foot long T-Rex, gladiator games and a bunch of bikers - yep, Graeme and Tanith's quirky wedding at Thorney Abbey was my kind of wedding!

When you first hear it’s going to be a biker wedding your imagination can run away with you (or at least my over active imagination does!). I started thinking of Easy Rider, with bar fights and drag racing in the car park.

Of course the truth is they were all much more like my biker brother: relaxed, polite and actually quite shy.

Although when I turned up to see Tanith in the morning and saw a crossbow propped up against the fireplace my imagination kicked in again! I’m still annoyed with myself I didn’t get them to bring it to the wedding and use it for some photographs.

But with a mechanical dinosaur and some gladiator games there was plenty of craziness to keep me occupied.

However before all that there was a totally different vibe as their ceremony was held in one of the grandest wedding venues in the area - Thorney Abbey.

With a powerful beam of sunlight hitting Tanith in the face throughout the service and a butterfly fluttering around the Abbey it felt like the omens were all good. Indeed it was a beautifully sunny day all day.

We held up the traffic with some of the group photographs, especially with the bikes. Sadly due to biker politics I’m unable to show some of the biker photographs.

The rest of the day was at Bedford Hall in Thorney and was incredibly relaxed and informal; although the gladiator games were conducted with a lot of enthusiasm.

My biggest worry for this wedding was how to light the 14ft baby T-Rex dinosaur. It was due to arrive around 9pm when it would be pitch black outside and the dinosaur was too large to fit inside. It was also a surprise for the guests so I couldn’t predict exactly where they’d be standing when it roared its way around the corner to surprise everyone.

In the end I lit it with two off-camera flashes and my car lights. It worked a charm.

Speaking of charm - I was delighted with this lovely Google review from Graeme and Tanith after they received their wedding photographs and album…

“Dan photographed our wedding in September. He was so helpful through discussions and on the day; truly is the world's most helpful photographer! Throughout the day he took so many amazing photos and made everyone he encountered smile with his relaxed approach and great humour. We did set him a bit of a challenge with some of the night time shots we requested but what he achieved was better than we could have imagined! Awesome chap, highly recommend!”
