Winter family photography in the woods

People assume that winter family photography isn’t great outside, but it totally is! I brought Oyadiyah and her family to the woods and we had an amazing photoshoot.

We actually took a few photographs in their home first as they wanted the variety. As you can see, family photography is more about the expressions and family connection rather than where you are.

I have lots of tricks, games and psychological techniques to help people of all ages feel comfortable in front of the camera… but I didn’t need any of them with these guys as they laughed, smiled and hugged their way through the photoshoot with effortless ease.

The benefits of winter family photography outside

The word ‘photography’ is actually two words in one ‘photo’-‘graphy’. ‘Photo’ means light and ‘graphy’ meaning ‘drawing’.

So, photography is effectively ‘drawing with light’!

Therefore, having good light is really important. The best light is always just after sunrise and just before sunset. In the summer sunrise and sunset are at very unsociable hours but in the winter the timing is perfect. Not only that, the sun is low all day long so even at midday the sun is still quite golden.

Even if the sun isn’t out, misty and moody weather can be really lovely in photographs too. The worst light for photography is harsh midday sun in summer.
