Family photoshoot at home - The benefits

FAmily photographer covering Cambridge to Peterborough and beyond…

Having your family photoshoot at home has so many benefits. Your home is where most of your memories are so why not have your family photoshoot there?

When the photoshoot is in your home every part of the photograph is a memory…

  • …The armchair grandad always sat on where he hooked the grandkids with his walking stick

  • …The Gruffalo book you read every night for 2 years

  • …The sound of laughter as the children jump on the bed

  • …The heart-melting chuckle of your baby when you play peek-a-boo by the crib

  • …When your Labrador still thinks he’s a puppy and since on your lap on the sofa

  • …The whole family snuggled on the sofa watching TV

  • …BBQs on hot summer evenings

  • …Penalty shoot-outs in the garden

  • …Your youngest being a hide and seek genius who outwits you every time

  • …Camping and toasted marshmallows on the lawn

  • …Hotdogs under a blanket as you watch dad set off the fireworks

What memories does your home hold?

What would it mean to you to have photographs of those memories to remind you and your children in years to come?

The benefits of family photoshoots at home

I’ve already talked about how many memories your home holds, but there are many other benefits too:

  1. The variety of photographs we can create is endless

  2. Everyone tells me they love natural photographs and there’s nothing more natural than hanging out at home

  3. When my parents sold my childhood home I was so sad because there were virtually no photographs of it. A home is like a member of the family so having a photoshoot at home helps preserve those memories

  4. It’s where your children are most relaxed and comfortable - especially compared with a studio

  5. You can’t be rained off and its never too hot or too cold

  6. Window light is beautiful

  7. You can try out different clothes if you can’t decide what to wear

  8. You can easily include all the family pets, from rabbits, dogs and cats through to bearded dragons, parrots and Guinea pigs.

  9. Grandparents can easily be involved without having to go to a studio or walk around the countryside

Family photoshoots at home - does you home need to be big and tidy?

Not at all! In fact it’s often those things that you might consider ‘clutter’ that hold so many memories.

Things like the children’s toys, trophies on the mantelpiece and holiday souvenirs on the book case.

Family photoshoots aren’t about perfection.

They’re about connection.

Connecting with each other.

Connecting with what’s really important.

In years to come they’ll help you connect with this moment in your life before its gone and forgotten.

A family water fight is the perfect example of something being perfectly imperfect!

What do you need to prepare for a photoshoot in your home

The great news is there’s nothing to physically prepare.

You don’t have to tidy, or hoover or dust (although I bet you will!).

You don’t have to get a haircut or buy new clothes or go on a crash diet.

This is because I don’t want you to be reoccupied with perfection or how things ‘look’.

I want you to focus your energy on connecting with your family in a loving, fun and laid back way. Your positive energy will reflect onto the children and result in beautiful, natural photographs.

I will of course help instigate and coax things so you’re never left unsure of what to do.

The only preparation before the photoshoot is that I’ll ask you (either over Zoom or through a questionnaire) questions like ‘what do you love most about each member of the family’ and ‘what activities do you love to do together’. This helps me plan for the photoshoot and be aware of what to look out for. For example, if you love how your toddler chuckles when dad blows raspberries on his belly then I’ll make sure we do it and I’ll get various perspectives of that moment you love.

And to prove how fun and relaxed the photoshoots are, here’s a behind the scenes video of me being my usual daft-self on some photoshoots…
